Nokia published metrics for its Nokia Store via its developer website, revealing that it is currently seeing more than 11 million downloads per day. The company also noted that 177 publishers have reached the 1 million download mark.

According to the vendor, the biggest market for the store is India, which dwarfs its nearest rival, China. Interestingly, the rest of the top-five also consists of the remaining BRIC countries – Brazil and Russia – along with Turkey, ahead of other large app markets such as the US and the UK.

Some observers suggested that the figures show that although Nokia has switched its focus firmly to Windows Phone for its future smartphones, there is still life left in the abandoned Symbian OS operating system. But the geographic performance was also seen as an indicator that Nokia has lost out to rival smartphone makers in Western Europe, which has traditionally been one of its strongholds.

In July 2011, Nokia said that daily downloads had passed the 7 million mark, following the removal of some registration requirements to download free apps. The company has not now updated on the number of apps available, but mid-last year the total was passed 50,000.

The Nokia Store supports operator billing in 46 countries, with credit card billing supported in 192.

Some 90 percent of visitors to the store use their local language, with the store being available in 32 languages.

The list of the most popular apps contains a number of familiar names. Top spot goes to Facebook Chat, followed by eBuddy Messenger, WhatsApp Messenger, High Speed 3D Free, and Skype.

The most used device to access the store is the N8 smartphone, ahead of the aging 5800 Xpress Music. In total, 154 devices are supported.
