Games catalogue app Steam has been launched in beta form for iOS and Android devices. The app allows gamers to chat to other Steam users, browse community groups, read user reviews and download games.

Steam has more than 40 million accounts around the world with more than 1,800 game titles for PC and Mac platforms.

The service has been developed by Valve, the developer of games such as Countrer-Strike and Half Life. “Mobile is changing way people interact, play games and consume media, and the Steam app is part of our commitment to meet customer demands and expand the service functionality of Steam to make it richer and more accessible for everyone,” said Valve co-founder and president Gabe Newell.

Gamers wanting to try the beta can download the app for free. They can then log in using their Steam account  details and register their interest in taking part in the closed beta. Valve will add registered users as the programme is expanded.
